I Tried a Cannabis Massage at Romatherapy

Being a lawyer, I spend 90% of my life stressed. And recently, I’d been experiencing some issues with my shoulders and a pain in my lower back that I just could not get rid of. So when I had the opportunity to try out a CBD infused massage at Romatherapy Body and Skin, a small studio deep in the heart of Tokai, I jumped at the chance.

I met with Debbie Brand, the owner, who has been a massage, health and skincare therapist since 2003, and has over 16 years of experience and passion. And it shows when you talk to her – the enthusiasm is so forthcoming that you are instantly are comforted and know you’re in capable hands. Which is definitely the case – Debbie has worked in award winning spas and well known salons in Cape Town and her qualifications include: SETA, SAAHSP and ITEC. Her passion is to keep updated with the latest techniques, trends and products.

After welcoming me into her space, I decided on a 90 minute massage, which Debbie believes is the minimum amount of time for a full body massage (she offers 120 minute massages as well!). The reason for this is because she takes her time and focuses on every area of your body, giving it what it needs, in addition to what you want. That’s not to say that you can’t do a 60 minute quick full body uplifting massage if that’s what you want, because the advantage of Romatherapy is how highly personalized and it is, and how Debbie is able to cater to each individual’s needs.

It’s because of this high level of customization and attention to detail that Debbie shies away from your tradition stock standard massages, and instead offers a fusion of different massage techniques chosen for each individual’s unique desires. This fusion massage is tailored using a variety of techniques & equipment including: swedish, deep tissue, lymphatic drainage, relaxation technique, hot stone, flexy cups and face and head massage.

It sounded incredible as I was in desperate need of everything but most importantly, to relax. Which is where the Canna Massage comes in.

CBD is Non-Psychoactive and Anti-inflammatory, and the benefits range from reducing pain and inflammation to fighting stress, promoting deeper sleep, and improving heart health.

Debbie explained that she CannaMeds, which is a small, local provider who hand-make their products in small batches. The CannaMeds products are cruelty free, organic and earth-friendly, and are created by extracting Cannabinoids from carefully selected legal small batches and contains less than 0.03% THC (which is why this massage won’t make you high, just very, very relaxed).

She then mixes the cannabis oil with essential oils to create a unique mix for each client (my mix contained: rose, lavender and ylang-ylang), unless you really enjoy a hempy smell for your massage, in which case she’s more than happy to oblige.

My essential oils mixed and the massage starting, Debbie was able to tell me about myself, like my anxiety, or ask me whether I get burning sensations in my feet sometimes, simply by touching the relevant area of my body. At some point I wondered whether she was a witch but, to be completely honest, was becoming too relaxed to care (spoiler alert: she’s just extremely good at what she does).

She used a combination of deep tissue, lymph drainage, swedish and head massages for me. Now, I’m usually not a big fan of head massages -it makes me feel awkward. But this one was incredible. Turns out that when done by the right person, head massages are heavenly. In fact, the entire massage was (well, maybe less so the lymphatic drainage, but it makes up by being extremely effective) was so unbelievably relaxing that I dozed off several times. I had walked in, worried that 90 minutes was going to be too long, but at the end I opened my eyes, confused at where the time had gone. I was warned that the next day my body might feel a bit like it does after a strenuous exercise session, and my muscles did feel tender. But so far, the pain in my shoulders and lower back have been kept at bay.

Hand on heart, this was one of the best massages I have ever had. Debbie has astonishing skill, and I am making another massage appointment with her asap.

If you don’t want a massage (although I highly recommend you do – her massage table has a holder for your hands under the face hole which, if you’re like me and struggle to hold you arms by your side, is a game-changer!), she offers other beauty services, and only works with quality products (such as Vitaderm for skincare, Footlogix for feet, Kinetics for nails and Italiwax for all waxing).
