Getting Botox with Dr. Gideon Maresky

I have always wanted to try Botox. I had a deep frown line in the middle of my brow, and had always joked that I would invoice the company at my last job for it, because of all the frowning I did there.

After turning 30 in October, I finally had the opportunity to address my forehead, and managed to make an appointment with Dr. Gideon Maresky to consult with him about getting Botox.

Before Botox – look at all the lines on my forehead

Dr Maresky is a specialist in reconstructive & cosmetic plastic surgery and based in Cape Town at the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital. I met him last Thursday, in his office with its beautiful view of Lion’s Head, and though I didn’t know what I had signed myself up for, was very quickly put at ease by this charismatic man.

Dr Maresky sat me down and asked me questions about myself, and what I wanted to achieve with Botox. We sat for a while, his anatomy book open on his desk for me illustrating the various skin layers, as he explained exactly how Botox works, as well as my type of skin generally. Turns out there are a lot of applications for Botox, not just cosmetic – for example, in 2010 Botox was approved for use with chronic migraines, with many patients are reporting success. So, as a migraine sufferer myself, not only would I get rid of these troublesome lines on my forehead, but I may also see in reduction in migraines, a win-win!

Dr Maresky did explain that Botox is superficial, and that some of my skin concerns could be solved with a skincare regime change, and guided me on the best way to tackle this. He also explained that it is temporary, and only lasts for about 3 months. This is because Botox works by paralyzing the communication between the nerves in the skin and the brain, but over time those nerves find a way a different path and a way to reconnect again. So this is not some once-off miracle procedure if that’s what you’re looking for.

I really appreciated the way Dr Maresky got to know me, and chatted with me. It was also comforting when he told me that my smile lines added character (after cracking a joke that made me laugh out loud) and that I should consider keeping them, which I did (we only focused on my forehead). It reminded me that at the end of the day, he was a professional medical doctor and not some Botox dispensing machine (in fact, he explained that he mostly does plastic surgery, so he does Botox and fillers when he isn’t in the operating room).

I had also suffered a major allergic reaction a few days prior, and was slightly anxious about that, but Dr Maresky put my mind at ease, and gave me some general medical advise to note going forward.

Just after Botox

Finally, it was time. Dr Maresky asked if I was ready and I hopped onto the bed.

Let me say something here: I hate needles. And I had just gotten a big antihistamine injection a few days ago which was fresh in my mind, so I wasn’t happy about this next part, and didn’t know what to expect. Luckily, Dr Maresky talked to me throughout, and explained as he did the injections, telling me about which muscles we would be focusing on, and to expect a pinch.

It was a weird sensation, tiny needles creating little pinches on my skin, and afterwards it looked like I had little insect bites on my forehead. I was told it could take between 1 – 7 days to show any effect, and that for the next 6 hours I should not exercise or lie down, which could increase bruising at the injection sites. I was so impressed at how quickly the procedure went as well, I actually left and came back to work and no one was the wiser!

One day after Botox - the deep line when I frown is gone

Even though I knew I had to give it time, I became obsessed with staring at my forehead, looking for change. The next day I tried my trademark frown and was pleased to see that the deep line that had troubled me and added to my “resting bitch face” was pretty much gone! In fact, 2009 study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that when people had Botox that prevented frowning, they had reduced negative mood. And it’s true! I am so happy with the results, and ecstatic I was able to try this out with Dr Maresky, and will definitely be back (I just discovered that he’s on The Entertainer and you can get Botox with him for 50% off!)
