Restaurant Week: Greenhouse at Cellars-Hohenort

The first time I visited the The Cellars-Hohenort in Constantia was when I accompanied a friend as she scouted wedding venues. Although she never ended up using the venue, I instantly fell in love with the entire place. And, while I had dined at the Conservatory, their other restaurant, from then on Greenhouse Restaurant had been put on my ‘must-dine’ list of places. So, I was ecstatic when this past weekend I finally got the opportunity to visit.

Restaurant Week is a great opportunity to try out top restaurants at a reduced price. Seeing Greenhouse on the list, I booked the lunch tasting menu at R550 per person (the usual price is R950 per person). There was an option to add on a wine pairing for an additional R350 per person, which we chose not to do this time.

Our lunch started off with breads (the popcorn butter was unique and exceptional), and then canapés (beautifully presented and delicious). To start, I chose the sashimi (fresh and mouth-watering), which was followed by the tshisanyama (the most perfectly done piece of beef I’ve had in a while) main, and the beet dessert (my favourite, which came served straight from the pot, served with a scoop of the chocolate ‘dirt’). The lunch ended with petit fours and we left completely satisfied.

I truly wish I could explain in more detail how perfect our experience was – the venue is breathtaking, we were sat at the window on a beautiful, sunny day, overlooking the wedding taking place in the garden. The service was faultless and we were attentively looked after by our waiters, who explained each of the dishes in great detail. I’m so happy I finally got to experience this restaurant, and would love to return one day.
